Deep Tide TechFlow message: On May 23, the People’s Procuratorate of Cangshan District, Fuzhou City, recently brought a public prosecution against a case in which Bitcoin was stolen and illegal gains were obtained. The defendant, Lin, took advantage of the convenience of being entrusted to assist in cashing out Bitcoin, stole the client Wang’s Bitcoin wallet keys and related data, and transferred 4 Bitcoins, then sold them for illegal gains of about 0.9 million yuan. In the first instance, the court sentenced him to 12 years and 7 months in prison for theft and imposed a fine of 0.3 million yuan; in the second instance, the court dismissed the appeal and upheld the original judgment. The prosecution pointed out that although Bitcoin does not have the same legal status as fiat currency, it has value, can be managed, and is transferable, and thus constitutes an object of property crime.
